June 17th, 2015 5:09 pm
Michael Steele / RESCON

Green is a colour used in all kinds of ways: money, marketing of environmentally friendly materials, discussions concerning energy conservation, sustainability and climate change.

However, the economic impact of the various uses of the word green is challenging:

- the way we currently design and construct our multi-residential projects;
- the ability to produce affordable housing;
- the knowledge base required to ensure profitability upon completion of a project....  Read more...

LYALL’S FILES: Healthy homes design chat in Denmark gets ideas flowing for RESCON team
May 21st, 2015 9:13 pm
Richard Lyall / RESCON

It was an intense tour through Copenhagen’s incredibly innovative new communities today capped with an eye-opening presentation on Active House Alliance.

If you follow the residential construction industry, you may have heard about Active House in November after the initiative in Toronto by Great Gulf Homes (a RESCON member and one of the founding companies of Active House) won the Wood WORKS! award for best residential wood design. This is an all-important subject for us as we continue our fact-finding mission on mid-rise wood-frame construction in the Danish capital after four fascinating days in Stockholm, Sweden. ...  Read more...

LYALL’S FILES: RESCON team awed by 8-storey wood-frame condo in Sweden
May 19th, 2015 7:12 pm
Richard Lyall / RESCON

We’ve seen the future of wood-frame construction in Ontario. It's 6,300 kilometres northeast in Scandinavia.

A team of RESCON staff and builder members are in Sweden – and when it comes to innovative residential construction, this country of 9.7 million punches above its weight. Especially with mid-rise wood-frame building.

This is important to our industry in Ontario because of the change to the Ontario Building Code that occurred on Jan. 1 this year when the limit of wood-frame buildings was raised from four storeys to six. ...  Read more...

LYALL’S FILES: Hammarby, Sweden, gives Toronto builders inspiration for mid-rise wood-frame construction

Richard Lyall / RESCON

Hej hej!

It’s Day 3 for the RESCON team in Stockholm. Saturday, we flew from Toronto to Copenhagen to here; Sunday, we were free to splash through the rain to see this beautiful city; Monday, we headed south of the capital to the village of Hammarby Sjostad, the “city by the lake.”

Aiming for completion by 2020, it will be home to 28,000 people in 12,000 condo apartments in buildings no higher than seven storeys high that I could eye. The $6.5-billion Cdn project was the site of a proposed Olympic village in 1997 when Stockholm competed with Athens for the right to host the 2004 Games. Stockholm lost the bid, but there was a desire to continue with the project to redevelop this 204-hectare brownfield. ...  Read more...

LYALL'S FILES: RESCON's mid-rise wood construction mission in Sweden, Denmark
May 15th, 2015 1:17 pm
Richard Lyall / RESCON

A team of RESCON members and staff is flying to Sweden and Denmark today to learn from the world’s leading mid-rise wood-frame construction experts.

We’ve finally got one six-storey wood-frame permit application in Ontario – a future hotel in Hamilton – but that pales in comparison to the eight-storey condo we’ll see in Sundyberg, Sweden. ...  Read more...

LYALL’S FILES: RESCON proud to help train youth at George Brown College

It was just two years ago that Clint Kissoon and I had a eureka moment at lunch.

As we broke bread, the George Brown College executive and I came up with a fantastic program at GBC involving RESCON, the voice of the GTA’s builders: three-year diploma Construction Engineering Technology graduates could become ready-made residential construction management professionals through a 28-week certificate program; RESCON would provide funding and do its part to fill a jobs gap on sites all over the GTA.

Two months after that lunch, the program was up and running. ...  Read more...
