RESCON continues to plan events that help you learn about the latest changes in the industry, and help provide you with the information to decide what options are best for your companies. Three events are coming up in May and June.
May 10: Retaining Employees in the Skilled Trades Symposium
RESCON has successfully received approval from the Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Development to begin working on a research project, partnering with our sub-trade association, ORCCA. The research project will focus on retention and recruitment practices in residential construction, with a focus on the voluntary trades. This kick-off event will bring together interested industry stakeholders, as well as introduce the scope of the research and the partners for the project. This informative and interactive event will allow participants to provide input on retention and recruitment within their organizations.
It is open to anyone who is interested in training and apprenticeship in the skilled trades including all builders, sub-trades, training or supervising staff, and skilled trades workers.
Date and Time: Thursday, May 10, 2018, 8 a.m. to noon.
Location: Toronto Vaughan Hilton Garden Inn, 3201 Highway 7, Vaughan, ON
RSVP required to attend – contact me for more information at firstname.lastname@example.org.
May 14: CDAO Construction Lien Act/Bill 142 Seminar
The Construction Design Alliance of Ontario (CDAO) is organizing a half-day session on the Construction Lien Act, aka Bill 142. Among other subjects, it will tackle how all stakeholders need to change their culture to adapt; changes to contracts and agreements related to the Act, including prompt payment and adjudication; and changes to collective agreements that may conflict with payment timelines in the Act.
The recommended attendees for this seminar are all CDAO member associations, architects, engineers, general contractors, trades and suppliers.
The speakers will be: Geza Banfai, McMillan LLP; Ted Betts, Gowling WLG; Steve Ness, Surety Association of Canada; Jerry Paglia, York Region; and Paul Raboud, Bird Construction.
Date and Time: Monday, May 14, 2018, 7:30 a.m. to 11 a.m.

June 12: Cannabis in Construction 2.0 Symposium at Eagle’s Nest Golf Club
While recreational cannabis legalization has been pushed from Canada Day to sometime in August, important details have emerged since our last seminar in October. This event will provide an overview and update of recent developments of the legislation, with a focus on both the federal and provincial frameworks. Employers and employees need to be aware of the specifics of the legislation (The Cannabis Act) and potential implications to the construction industry.
This event is open to all builders, site supers, health and safety staff, and sub-trades.
