Here's a snapshot of some of the most important issues
for the residential construction industry.
The Wynne government is out of touch with our industry.
The government is preparing to overhaul the Ontario Municipal Board, and it added stricter rent controls through its Fair Housing Plan. We wished they had addressed the real problem: a lack of supply.
That's why we recently held our industry event "Supply is the Solution" in which our staff summarized results of two studies: one for Ryerson University on cutting through the laborious approvals process; one on tall buildings for the University of Toronto.
That event spurred an interactive dialogue with many of our key stakeholders, but you can't miss our next event on Tuesday, May 23. Then, we'll launch a report by the Canadian Centre for Economic Analysis that takes a hard look at data from across the province to explain the affordability issues of the province, with a special emphasis on the GTHA. CANCEA considers more than 40 factors to measure the true cost of housing.

Meanwhile, below, don't miss my "Housing Fairy Tale" in the Toronto Sun; Andrew Pariser writes about Daniels' use of health and safety data; I write about the Fair Housing Plan; our George Brown College program inspires building officials; and Daily Commercial News writes about RCCAO's new report on excess construction soil.

Enjoy, and have a safe holiday weekend!

Sam Tassone of The Daniels Corporation holds his plaque marking more than a decade of service and leadership on the Metropolitan Toronto Apartment Builders Association. With him are, from left, Joe Francavilla of Menkes, RESCON president Richard Lyall and John Kluznik of Daniels.

A housing fairy tale, by Richard Lyall

Lyall gets a little creative and uses an old style of storytelling to explain a very current dilemma -- the GTHA's housing crunch.

Supply is the solution, not tighter rental market

While intentions may be good, Lyall says the Fair Housing Plan does not do enough to increase the supply of housing in Ontario (or the GTHA).

Daniels takes aim at 'zero accidents'

The Daniels Corporation's health and safety guru Jon Kitancevski has nurtured a culture that relies heavily on data, writes RESCON vice-president Andrew Pariser.
